Background
Teatro alla Scala is an opera house in Milan, Italy. The theatre was inaugurated on 3 August 1778 and was originally known as the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala (New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala).
Most of Italy’s greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from around the world, have appeared at La Scala. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres globally. It is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet, La Scala Theatre Orchestra, and the Filarmonica della Scala orchestra. The theatre also has an associate school, known as the La Scala Theatre Academy (Italian: Accademia Teatro alla Scala), which offers professional training in music, dance, stagecraft, and stage management.

From 7 May 2020, La Scala shared its most precious treasures with audiences around the world through Google Arts & Culture:
- 69 tours with a Street View
- Ballet and opera online (for payment and for free)
- Over 259,000 digitised images from the theatre’s archives, including sketches and pages from a rare manuscript editions
Moreover, opera and ballet performances became accessible online or in TV streaming RaiPlay.
Impact
Collaboration with Google Arts and culture let to the Teatro alla Scala to putt its most precious treasures online and to reach audiences around the world at home after its closure due to the pandemic. Through collaboration with TV Italian channels, opera and ballet were in streaming and online. Opera became more accessible for all – most of the materials, documents and images are available for free.
